Norway

The west coast of Norway, starting at the city of Bergen and moving northward, is a paradise of natural beauty. Massive fjords line the entire coastline all the way up to the border with Russia. Many of the prettiest locations are in and around Bergen, and therefore are easily accessible by charter yacht.

Bergen itself is a thriving city with a waterfront that is tailor-made for walking. Colorful shops, gourmet and homestyle restaurants, and lively fish markets are just a few of the things you will encounter during an afternoon stroll. Inside the boutiques, look for lined sweaters that are sometimes made by hand. They’re some of the warmest you’ll find in the world, knitted with beautiful patterns that defy winter’s cold.

The fjords begin to appear within a few hours’ cruising to the north of Bergen. Their names are a mishmash of consonants and vowels: Hardangerfjord and Sognefjord and the Jostedalsbreen glacier are just a few of the places your charter yacht can visit. Their beauty will leave you speechless, whether you can pronounce their names or not.

Watch for small towns in some of the valleys, and be prepared for an artistic surprise or two. Way up in Alesund, the port is dotted with Art Nouveau architecture.
