Vilamoura

Decoration

One of the most sophisticated, well-appointed, and upscale resort destinations on the Algarve coast, Vilamoura is a much-favoured charter hub on Portugal’s central southern coast. Known for its world-class marina, five championship golf courses, and Blue Flag beaches, Vilamoura is also part of the “Golden Triangle,” together with Vale de Lobo and Quinta do Lago, although it offers a slower, unhurried experience compared to neighboring towns like Albufeira. The marina itself is one of the largest in Europe, with over 1,000 berths, and its waterfront is lined with high-end restaurants, bars, and boutiques. Further inland lie the Roman ruins of Cerro da Vila, which are easily accessible from the marina and include well-preserved fish-salting baths, mosaic floors, and villa remains dating to the 1st century AD. Praia da Falésia, east of the marina, is among some of the more visually striking beaches on the Algarve, offering a four-kilometre stretch of fine sand backed by ochre and red cliffs that jut sharply from the coastline. The family-friendly Praia de Vilamoura is perfect for a day of lounging, with common and bottlenose dolphins frequently sighted in the waters offshore. Vilamoura’s unique location on the coast, and its proximity to Faro Airport, make it a rather appealing starting point for extended charter itineraries east towards the Ria Formosa Natural Park or west towards Carvoeiro and Lagos.

Vilamoura, like many destinations on the Algarve coast, benefits from a warm Mediterranean climate with long, dry summers and mild winters. The prime time for a Vilamoura charter is between the months of May and October, as the sea and weather conditions are the calmest for coastal exploration. July and August are the busiest months, with the marina operating at full capacity and beaches at their most crowded.
