Zadar
One of the most captivating and historically layered charter destinations in Croatia, Zadar combines a remarkably preserved medieval old town with direct access to over 300 islands, nature parks, and some of northern Dalmatia’s finest cruising waters. The city itself is home to a treasure trove of sites, like the 1st-century Roman Forum, the largest in Croatia outside Split, which stands alongside the 9th-century Church of St Donatus, and the waterfront Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun installations that Zadar’s Riva promenade is genuinely unlike any other on the Adriatic. Ugljan, located immediately across the channel, is known for its ancient olive groves and the 15th-century Franciscan monastery of St Jerome at Preko. Further south-west, lies Dugi Otok’s Sakarun beach, a shallow sweep of white pebble and turquoise water framed by pine that ranks among Croatia’s most celebrated anchorages, whilst the nearby Veli Rat Lighthouse, at 42 metres, one of the tallest on the Adriatic, is just a short walk away. Telašćica Nature Park, with its dramatic limestone cliffs and the warm saltwater lake Mir, is a natural draw for outdoor enthusiasts, as is the Kornati archipelago, whose 89 bare limestone islands represent the Adriatic at its most raw and elemental. Zadar’s location in northern Dalmatia makes it an ideal starting point for extended cruising south towards Šibenik, Split, and the islands of central and southern Croatia.
When to go
May – October
High season
July – August
Zadar and its surrounding archipelago are known for their favourable Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and mild winters. The best time for a Zadar charter is between May and October, when calmer sea conditions and long daylight hours make for excellent cruising. July and August are the busiest months, while the shoulder months of May, June, September, and early October offer very pleasant conditions with quieter waters and more secluded island experiences overall.
