Portugal

Decoration

Bordered by the vast Atlantic Ocean, with diverse landscapes ranging from coastal cities to remote island villages that are steeped in centuries of maritime heritage, Portugal offers charterers a distinctive and increasingly sought-after cruising experience. Running along the western side of the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal’s coastline is home to

historic port cities, dramatic limestone cliffs, sandy beaches, and archipelagos shaped by Atlantic winds and currents. Many Portuguese yacht charters start in the capital city of Lisbon, cruising along the Tagus River so charter guests can take in the view of stunning landmarks like the Belém Tower and the Monument of the Discoveries, reminders of the country’s Age of Exploration. Nearby Cascais and the cliffs of Arrábida Natural Park offer charterers more sheltered anchorages, sparkling waters, and scenic beaches, perfect for a morning or afternoon enjoying the open waters. Further north, the city of Porto provides easy access to the Douro River valley, where terraced vineyards, traditional wine estates, and quiet riverside towns await discovery. Further from the mainland, the volcanic archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores offer more remote charter grounds characterised by towering cliffs, lush landscapes, and exceptional marine biodiversity, with frequent sightings of dolphins and whales in the surrounding waters. Due to the country’s location, right between the Mediterranean and northern Europe, Portugal also serves as an ideal starting or ending point for extended cruising itineraries towards Spain, Morocco, and the wider coasts of southern Europe.

Portugal is best known for its mild Atlantic climate, making the period between the months of April and November the most ideal for charterers. Spring and early autumn offer warmer temperatures, steady cruising conditions, cultural events, and fewer visitors. The peak season of July and August is known for their lively coastal atmosphere, hot weather, and sunshine, but marinas and popular anchorages tend to be busier during these peak summer months.
