Rhodes
Also known as the Island of the Sun and the Island of Knights, Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese islands and arguably one of the most historically layered charter destinations in the eastern Mediterranean. Home to a crossroads of civilisations where Greek, Byzantine, Ottoman, and medieval influences converge along 253 kilometres of coastline, the island has roots going back to the Neolithic era. Famous for its well-preserved medieval Old Town, a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, sun-drenched beaches, archaeological sites, and vibrant nightlife, the island offers something for everyone. A major commercial center, it is also home to Mandraki Harbour, traditionally held to be the site of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. With ancient Greek temples, Byzantine churches, synagogues, mosques, and the Palace of the Grand Master, its city is awash with cultural and historical sites for guests to explore. Beyond the capital, the island has much to offer along its coastline. The Acropolis of Lindos, perched on a clifftop above a whitewashed village, provides sweeping views of the Aegean and is one of the most striking anchorages in the Dodecanese. At the island’s southern tip is Prasonis, a world-renowned windsurfing and kitesurfing destination, whilst the mountainous interior rises to over 1,200 metres at Mount Atavyros. Rhodes’ unique position at the south-eastern edge of the Dodecanese makes it a natural starting point for a more extended charter through the archipelago.
When to go
May – September
High season
July – August
Rhodes enjoys over 300 days of sunshine each year, with a long, dry summer season ideal for cruising. The best period for a Rhodes charter runs from May to September when warm temperatures and calm cruising prevail. July and August bring the hottest weather, but also the busiest anchorages and historic sites. May, June, and September offer the same reliable sunshine with fewer visitors and milder conditions for exploring ashore.
