Skiathos
Said to be the most accessible of the Sporades archipelago, the westernmost island of Skiathos is home to dense pine forests and more than 60 beaches, cementing its reputation as one of the most beautiful cruising areas in Greece. Its harbour is ideally located minutes away from its international airport, making it the perfect spot to start a Sporades or Skiathos charter. While Skiathos may be smaller than its inhabited sister islands, the variety of landscape, activities and sheer natural beauty more than make up for its compact size. Chief among Skiathos beaches is Koukounaries, an arc of soft white sand backed by a protected forest and lagoon nature reserve. Around the headland is Banana beach, best known for its watersports and sunset bars, and from there a forest path leads to the quieter sands of Elia.
On the rugged northern coast is Lalaria, another of the island’s most stunning beaches, consisting of a crescent of bleached, egg-smooth pebbles beneath chalk cliffs. The best part? Lalaria is only accessible by yacht. Aside from its beaches, Skiathos has much to offer, like the ruins of the medieval Kastro fortress. Located on the northern tip and abandoned in 1829, the fortress provides dramatic Aegean views. The 18th-century Moni Evangelistrias monastery, where the Greek flag was first raised, cannot be missed and features its own vineyard and café, while Skiathos Town, with its cobbled alleys, whitewashed walls and harbourfront tavernas that offer the catch of the day.
