Korčula
Home to a walled town of pale limestone set on a thumb of land, surrounded by towers and backed by vineyards, the island of Korčula is the Adriatic’s medieval showstopper without Dubrovnik’s crowds. Located about halfway between Split and Dubrovnik, Korčula is a natural stop on any southern Dalmatian charter. The island’s old town is built on a herringbone street plan laid out in the 13th century, angled to draw in the summer maestral and block the winter bora, with the 15th-century Cathedral of St Mark at its centre. The Moreška, a sword dance staged here for more than 400 years, still runs weekly through summer. An ideal charter destination in Croatia, the ACI Marina Korčula is located beside the Old Town walls, with berths for superyachts up to 45 metres. Between town and the settlement of Lumbarda are a group of twenty small islands. Badija, the largest, features a 15th-century Franciscan monastery and a well-protected southern anchorage. Lumbarda’s sandy vineyards produce Grk, a white grape grown almost nowhere else, used to make one of the island’s signature white wines. With Mljet, Lastovo and Pelješac within easy reach, Korčula is the ideal starting or ending point for a longer Croatian charter.
