Mljet

Decoration

The greenest and most densely forested island in Croatia, Mljet serves as the gateway to Mljet’s National Park. Nestled in the southern part of the Dalmatian archipelago, Mljet is surrounded by clear waters threaded with Roman ruins, and is by far among the quietest charter destinations in the area. In contrast to the bare limestone landscapes that make up most of the Adriatic islands, Mljet is two-thirds forest, dotted with warm, watered lakes rimmed by pines. The western third of the island has been a national park since 1960, protecting two saltwater lakes, Veliko and Malo Jezero, and the pine forest around them. Polače, the largest and best-sheltered bay, is screened by four islets and lined with Roman palace ruins. Pomena, protected by the islet of Pomeštak, sits nearer the lakes and the park’s cycling paths. There are no marinas, and anchoring inside the park is permitted only in these two bays, making it a highly coveted charter destination. On land, a 12th-century Benedictine monastery occupies St Mary’s islet in the Great Lake. Eastward lie the sandy coves of Saplunara and Odysseus Cave, where legend places Calypso, making Mljet the perfect match for history and nature lovers. Located between Dubrovnik and Korčula, Mljet slots naturally into a more extended Croatian itinerary.

Croatia's charter season runs from April to October, with the shoulder months of May, June and September offering the most comfortable cruising conditions, with moderate temperatures, gentle winds and warm waters. July and August bring the strongest heat, but also the busiest anchorages; Polače and Pomena fill early, and rates rise sharply during the summer months.
